General information
Gaff sailing cutter with centreboard and auxiliary engine / “Royal service vehicle” / sailing cutter from 1913
The original “JUIST” was built in 1913 in Wewelsfleth (Stör/Elbe – Wilstermarsch) at the shipyard of Johann Junge – the recognized best boat builder for professional and official vehicles of his time.
The JUIST was a “touring boat” for sailing and motor operation and had the construction number 212. She was built on behalf of the “Königliche Wasserbauamt (Royal Hydraulic Engineering Office) in Norden/Ostfriesland.
The new construction/replica took place in 2001 at the Bültjer timber cutter shipyard in Ditzum/Ems. The Bültjer building no. 242 was built according to the original blueprints and half-models by Joh. Junge. The templates come from the German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven.
The ship was built traditionally, using old craftsmanship techniques, oak on oak. Aged for at least 1 year per cm of wood thickness. Plank thickness 4.5 cm.
The deck is covered with narrow Burma teak with a thickness of 4.5 cm. Mast and spars are made of glued Oregonpine.
The wooden boat builder Lücke Meinders (Uncle Lulu) had 50 years of boat building experience at the Bültjer shipyard, he was a real craftsman genius!
The sails were also traditionally made in Marstall Insel Aerö (DK), at Ebbes Badebyggery and Sejlloft. Everything is “hand-sewn” from clipper canvas in narrow strips. All seams triple stitched with brown thread. All thimbles and lieches are sewn exclusively by hand. In the sail “JJ” stands for Joh. Junge.
