General description / History
Panna Wodna was built in a series of 4 ships for the Polish Naval Yacht Club. At the time, the Polish Navy awarded A&R an order for 10 ships. The other 6 ships were two Seafarthkreuzers of 80 m2, 6 meters and rubber boats. Of these four 50m2, three are still sailing.
The Seafarthkreuzer class is one of the first classes that was developed around the First World War to enable safe and seaworthy sailing at sea (competition). The ships were built under Lloyd class and proved to be very suitable as training ships for the German and Polish navies. Many of these ships were transported to England as war spoils (Windfall) after the war. The Panna Wodna is an exception to this. The Panna Wodna has smuggled refugees from the Nazi and later Polish/Russian regime to Sweden on several occasions. The current owner has newspaper articles about these events. Later, Panna Wodna actively competed in Sweden and, for example, won the first sailing competition around Gottland.
The current owner bought the Panna Wodna in Stockholm twenty years ago. She proved to be solid and she was in good condition. Most likely because of the short summers and long winters, but also due to the fact that the first engine was installed as late as the mid-1980s. She proved to be structurally sound and in good condition. The original deck had already been replaced once in the 1980s but needed attention.
The owner has carried out extensive restoration work in the Netherlands:
- New engine installed, new propeller shaft, new propeller and new rudder blade (2005)
- Various floors and frames renewed (2007 -2018)
- Toilet with storage space for rugs and hanging clothes.
- New deck 2007 (deck from the 80’s needed replacement)
- New complete wooden keel with new bolts (2018)
- Various improvements to rigging and sails (2019-2021)
All work was carried out at a shipyard in the Netherlands by the current owner, in consultation with his friend and boat builder, Joop Doomernik of Doomernik Yachts.
Panna Wodna has sailed in Dutch, Belgian, French and English waters for the last 20 years. She can easily be sailed by two people and is a pleasant family ship. The Panna Wodna is crewed by 5-6 sailors during races.
In Sweden the original wooden mast has been replaced by an aluminum mast. Later the mast was extended and the boom shortened. The attachment point for the forestay is also placed further forward on the bow. The sail area has remained the same. This adjustment has given the Panna Wodna a much better sail balance. She is truly a joy to sail, whether the weather is nice or the wind is force 6, the boat remains perfectly balanced with the right choice of sail. The current owner regularly competes with her. At a local level but also on larger classical fields with very good results. It is special to sail at the forefront of a field of modern ships with a design that is almost a hundred years old and to win prizes for it.
Also all running rigging, runners and backstay modernized with raking gear and dynema lines. The mainsheet is also equipped with a Harken, which makes it look like you are sailing a dinghy.
