The ship was built in 1978 from shipbuilding steel by the Jonny Eimers shipyard in Wischhafen/Elbe based on an old original plan of a cargo ewer. It has a slightly protruding stem, a transom with an attached single-blade rudder, a 3-bladed fixed propeller and two attached cabin superstructures. The hydraulic wheel steering can be switched to tiller operation.
History
In 1978, a small Lüheewer was built at the Jonny Eimers shipyard in Wischhafen on the Elbe, a so-called Giekewer – because it has one mast.
As a Giekewer, ANNA has leeboards, as is also common in the Netherlands. As a flat-bottomed ship, they are also used to sail cross courses.
An authentic ship was built based on an old original plan, the kind that in earlier times sailed the Elbe and its tributaries such as the Lühe in large numbers. In order to be able to turn on the Lühe, the small barge had to maintain a certain length.
ANNA was designed as a pure sailing ship – but as a replica it was of course equipped with an engine. The original hold was designed with a comfortable cabin and pantry. The forepeak for the “servant” was equipped with double bunks and a wet room, and bunks and storage space were installed in the stern, where the skipper usually lived.
In this way, a small cargo sailing ship was turned into a handy, comfortable and easy-to-sail unique model. There is extensive written and picture material on the construction and equipment.
How did the construction come about, long after the time of the cargo-carrying barge was over?
There were always enthusiastic and interested people who wanted to sail on traditional ships. There were still some originals on the market in more or less good condition. Many old ships ended up in the blast furnaces or rotted away in a corner of the harbor.
The Schleif family, as the first owner, wanted such a vehicle and found a company that could still do something like that in the small Lower Saxony Eimers shipyard.
Two more examples of this type of barge were built. A slightly smaller mizzen barge called GALATEA from BUXTEHUDE, which is said to still be in operation, and a motor ship with an barge hull.
The Schleif family completely equipped ANNA after the shipyard delivered the hull and got her into operation before they were offered a larger ship. ANNA was therefore for sale. The new owner neglected the ship in the following years, however, before it was brought back into shape by the next owners, the Reimann family, who gave them a lot of pleasure for around 20 years. In 2005, the current owner bought ANNA and moved her from Lühe to Elmshorn.
Further overhaul and maintenance work was carried out continuously and every year there were trips in the home waters on the Elbe, but also to the North Sea mudflats, to Holland, Denmark and inland waters as far as Berlin.
ANNA is a strongly built and solid ship that can also be used for long trips. Anyone who knows about flat-bottomed boats knows what they can do and in which areas they are at home.
