THE WORLD’S LARGEST GAFF CUTTER SET TO RETURN TO THE CLASSIC FLEET ONCE AGAIN. WORDS: RON VALENT How many lives does one yacht have? The giant cutter Lulworth certainly continues to inspire yachtsmen as it has always done since she was first launched in 1920. The last remaining of the once so famous »Big Five« racing yachts was rescued several times. On February 14 2006, Lulworth was relaunched after five years’ work ashore in Viareggio. She was nothing short of spectacular and welcomed as the restoration of the century. Awards were won and, given her weather, she also did well on the racecourse. Superlatives were reinvented for this impressive, 46-metre-long yacht that at the time boasted the tallest wooden spar as well as the largest mainsail on any cutter or sloop in the world. 38
