He founded Paul Spooner Design (PSD) in 2016 and has built up an enviable reputation with his beautiful classic designs that benefit from modern materials and underwater shapes as well as his depth of expertise in the area of restorations of classic yachts. The beautifully restored gaff ketch Cariad that was launched last year after a total restoration in Thailand is a good example of his work. G: What would you qualify as »my town« at the moment? PS: I live in a tiny little village called East Wellow. It’s a pleasant little place with a lovely parish church dating back something like 900 or so years. The only really notable thing about the village is that Florence Nightingale was born here and is buried in the village church. So, if I would have to name a »my town« it would be Romsey, which is really close by. G: But you weren’t born there? PS: No. I was born in North West London. G: And what is special about Romsey? PS: Once again nothing really in particular other than some history and its convenient location to a number of other interesting towns and places like Salisbury and Winchester in the area. Romsey is a medieval market town with a beautiful old centre with lots of old buildings. There is a 13th-century hunting lodge, an 18th-century coaching inn and the 19th-century corn exchange. The most striking thing is the huge Romsey Abbey. It is also well known for its disproportionate number of pubs. There have even been guide books published listing them all. It has a population of around 15,000 and is about 10 kilometres north of Southampton. Some really famous people have lived there, like Lord Mountbatten who was once Viceroy of India and the 19th-century British prime minister Lord Palmerston. G: Romsey is conveniently located? To your work? PS: My office is in a cabin in my backyard but of course it is quite close to Southampton, Portsmouth, the Hamble and Cowes which really are yachting centres and so in that sense the location is important for my work. G: Things to do or see in Romsey and the surrounding area? PS: Well my backyard borders on the New Forest, a really large National Park that stretches all the way down to the coast. So wild horses for which the forest is famous and other wild animals come all the way up to my fence. And of course if you are in this area you have to go and have a look at Stonehenge which is also close by. G: Eating out? Anything in particular you would recommend? PS: Years ago I spent a lot of time in Mexico so that is my favorite food. There is a fantastic restaurant serving really authentic Mexican food in Salisbury. It is called Tinga. G: What about bars? Nightlife? PS: Afraid nothing whatsoever in East Wellow but of course there are several good English pubs in Romsey. My favourite though is the Cuckoo Inn in Hamptworth which is the next village just a few miles to the west. For what you call nightlife you would have to head down to Southampton. // 128 Tickets: ,- • - • www.shmf.de SHMF Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival . . Kiel • Freilichtbühne Krusenkoppel . .
