a first in yachting and yacht clubs, the Vintage Classic Yacht Club has struck up a partnership with digital agency BOYD who have created with it an interactive mobile experience about the boats and the people who own and sail them. It’s a virtual yacht club with a virtual clubhouse with virtual experiences and if you wish to sample it BOYD is free to download on tablet and phone via the App Store and Play Store. Chris Savage is CEO of BOYD and races on Baruna, the 1938 S&S yawl recently restored at Robbie & Berking: »We noticed that sailors and owners on boats share many common interests yet they don’t tend to mix that often at regattas or after racing, so we wanted to do something about that … we wanted to introduce everyone to each other and encourage community, knowledge, friendships and understanding. Someone can be moored alongside or near to another boat, open the App on their mobile and be able to touch each person and hear them introduce themselves and what they do. It breaks the ice. Encourages interaction like a virtual introduction. People will then be more open and confident mixing and interacting with each other on the quay or in the bar – it almost feels like you’ve met the person before.« The BOYD App experience for VCYC is not just limited to the owners and sailors. Each part of the boat can be touched to hear from sailmakers, regatta organisers, suppliers, sponsors and supporters. BOYD is a multi-media experience that has won awards on both sides of the Atlantic and has had partnerships with many leading luxury brands like Bentley, NetJets, Monaco Yacht Show, Moët Hennessy and Leading Hotels of the World.
