On December 3, 2022, at 5 p.m. at the Robbe & Berking Museum<\/h2>\n\n

<\/p>\n\n

It took 3,650 hours of construction work before Jan von der Bank was able to launch his 9.5-meter-long retro racer R\u00c8MY <\/em>, made of plywood, epoxy resin, and mahogany veneer, from the tiny garage shipyard next to his house.<\/p>\n\n

<\/p>\n\n

This book documents all stages of construction, from the erection of the first frames in February 2017, through the expansion, veneering, and varnishing of the hull, the interior construction of the cabin, the casting and installation of the keel, and the rigging of the mast, to the christening and the first successful sailing trips off Kiel in June 2022.<\/p>\n\n

In addition, it offers a very personal insight into an intense, sometimes adventurous time that brought the author and boat builder not only the joy of craftsmanship, but also many new friendships and some surprising insights about himself. And in the end, a special yacht that, with its many surprising details, is probably one of a kind.<\/p>\n\n

Jan von der Bank was world champion in the Contender single-handed dinghy class and is known in sailing circles by the nickname “Backe.” He is an author (“Die Farbe der See” [The Color of the Sea]), screenwriter for television crime dramas (“Der Alte,” “Tatort”), and has been an enthusiastic hobby boat builder for five years.<\/p>\n\n

The high-quality hardcover illustrated book was published in November 2022 by KJM-Buchverlag in Hamburg. Its 104 pages contain over 300 color illustrations, bilingual descriptions of the images and construction, and additional texts on boat building.<\/p>\n\n
